Claudia Iten has enjoyed great success worldwide in the past four years with the role of
Isolde in Richard Wagner‘s Tristan und Isolde: in 2014 her interpretation was nominated
for the Golden Mask Award and earned her an invitation to the Golden Mask Festival.
Other engagements as Isolde have taken her to the Staatstheater Nürnberg and the
Theater Aachen (role debut in 2011/12), to the Nederlandse Reisopera, the Teatro
Communale in Modena and the Teatro Communale in Ferrara.
Claudia Iten is also in great demand as Leonore (Fidelio). In the coming season (2017/18) she will be appearing in this role as a guest artist at the opéra Angers Nantes among others. In recent years Claudia has sung Leonore to critical acclaim in a variety of productions: in Bogotá (Teatro Colón), Rennes, Cagliari, Saarbrücken, Wuppertal and Kiel, and at the Reinsberg Castle Arena Festival.
She has also performed parts such as Chrysothemis (Elektra) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in Weimar and Kiel, Elisabeth (Tannhäuser) in Kiel and Frankfurt, Senta (Der Fliegende Holländer) in Dortmund and Gertrud (Hänsel und Gretel) in Hannover, Nürnberg and Karlsruhe.
Her repertoire also encompasses works from the realm of Italian opera. She has sung Tosca in Weimar and Freiburg, Turandot in Weimar and Abigaille (Nabucco) in Münster and in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
Before switching to soprano, Claudia Iten sang as a mezzo-soprano at the Opéra de Fribourg and the Kammeroper in Vienna and was for four years a member of the Theater Kiel company. Her repertoire included such roles as Rosina in Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni und Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro.
Alongside her operatic activity, Claudia Iten also performs in oratorio and lieder. She has an extensive alto/mezzo repertoire in oratorio, extending from the Renaissance to contemporary works.
As a dramatic soprano, she also sings appropriate soprano parts in large-scale Romantic works.
Claudia Iten can be seen on DVD as Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio (conducted by Martin Haselböck, on NCA) and as Martha in Cristóbal Halffter’s Lazaro (world première production, on Neos).
Claudia studied in her native Switzerland with Dorothea Galli in Zürich, and continued her studies with Anna Reynolds, Margreet Honig, Susanne John and Mirella Freni.
